The mission is as dangerous as any undertaken during the War. Norway has fallen into the hands of the Nazis and General Heden ( Paul Bargtoff),the indomitable Norwegian commander is taken prisoner. Rescuing Hedenis of paramount significance to the allies. Captain Bob Owen ( Lyle Talbot), Lt. Eric Falken ( George Neise) and Radioman Harry ( Charles Rogers) have been handpicked by the British to rescue the General. Just whenall seems to be going well, the commandos run into Eric’s charming ex-girlfriend Ingra ( June Duprez), who betrays them to the Germans. Overpowering the Gestapo, the commandos manage to get General Heden out of prison. The border however is still miles away and one man stands between them and success - the clever German commandant Oberst Von Ritter ( Victor Varconi), who seems to out guess them at every step. Will Owen’s training, skills and wit see them through to safety? A2ZCDS.com has done well to preserve this vintage Hollywood Classic on DVD.
Nicknamed ‘The Serial King’, director Spencer Gordon Bennet entered the film business as a stuntman. In response to a New York newspaper advertisement, Bennet agreed to jump from the Palisades of the Hudson River while dressed in a suit. This job fetched him one dollar for every foot of distance he fell. There was no looking back for Bennet after this unusual debut. They Raid by Night is a fabulous example of Bennett’s insightful direction and understanding of the subtleties of human nature and has been preserved on DVD by A2ZCDS.com.
Running Time: 74 Minutes
MPAA Ratings: NR
War movies do not get better than this. Despite apparent constraints onthe budget, director Spencer Bennet deserves a pat on the back for his realistic portrayal of the war. There are several outstanding features in this film that even the most casual observer is unlikely to miss. First, unlike most WW II narratives, the story is set in fascinating Norway. Second, the cast was hand picked to perfection. Lyle Talbot’s depiction of a British commando and Victor Varconi’s portrayal of a German commander deserve Oscars. Third, the story is as true-to-life asany Avant grade war narrative that rolled out of Hollywood’s studios in the forties. Devoid of unnecessary frills, the story is fast paced and stacked with edge-of-the-seat suspense. A dash of humor provides some welcome relief amidst tense drama.
All in all, this story of a commando team that is air dropped into Norway to rescue a General and fly him to England is a pretty enjoyable affair and one that the entire family can enjoy together.
That was an excellent movie - as good as any we have today. It has subtle humor, the acting is superb and the direction flawless. It is atpar with other World War II classics such as “The Guns of Naveron” and“Where Eagles Dare”. You have to watch this gripping drama unfold tillthe very end."

"This is surely A World War II classic that was hidden in some archives andunearthed and restored for us all to view. Thank you forbringing this out. It has all the makings of a great film - bravery, betrayal, passionate nationalism and a fight to the end for freedom from oppression. We enjoyed every moment of it."
