The story is set in the 1930's. Red River Johnny (Johnny Carpenter) gathers his friends and returns to claim the heritage of his father who was outlawed many years ago by the sheriff of Red River. The present Sheriff Masters (Verne Teters), son of the man Johnny's father shot, is his enemy. Besides facing a hostile sheriff, Johnny has to face the villain;a chap named Three Finger Jack (Jack Ingram) who frames Red River Johnny (John Carpenter) for a series of bank holdups and stagecoach holdups, which worsens Johnny’s case in clearing his family’s name. And to make matters worse there is a back stabber in Johnny’s group, who is giving out information about him to a member of Three Finger Jack.

In the midst of this entire plot Johnny has a variety of women pursuing him, out of which he chooses only one.

Eventually Johnny learns that Three-Finger plans to rob the town bank, and gathers his men and wipes out Three-Finger and his gang.

MPAA Ratings: Approved

Son of the Renegade was the first of a short series of westerns produced and written by John Carpenter who also starred in it. John Carpenter made one more of these low-budgeters before he began billing himself as John Forbes. From the 1940s and until he was evicted in 1994 to make room for a housing project, Carpenter ran the "Heaven on Earth" ranch for handicapped children in Glendale.

Tough-looking Jack Ingram began his long show business career as a minstrel player and later reportedly toured with Mae West. He began turning up playing scruffy henchmen and assorted other B-Western villains in the mid-'30s and was later the featured heavy in Columbia serials. Ingram would go on to appear in a total of 200 Westerns and approximately 50 serials in a career that later included appearances on such television programs as The Cisco Kid and The Lone Ranger.
