Born in Minneapolis and raised in San Diego, director Lew Ayres, a college dropout, was found by a talent scout in a nightclub in Los Angeles. A conscientious objector, Ayres served as a reluctant medic in World War II. His anti-war sentiments are apparent in this film based on the lives of Americans during the Civil War. Hearts in Bondage is one of the only three movies that Ayres directed, the other two being Alters of the World and Alters of the East. A2ZCDS have brought this old Hollywood Classic feature films on DVD.
Running Time: 72 Minutes MPAA Ratings: NREDITORIAL REVIEW: "Centered on the bloody civil war that left thousands wounded, dead and heartbroken, the fabulous narrative in this timeless old classic film from A2ZCDS recounts the bitter impact of the war on lives of all those who were compelled by patriotism to take sides. The war sundered bonds of friendship, separated lovers and split families whose ideologies differed from one another. The fierce battles, fuelled by strong loyalties, are shown in a heartrending manner in this film. While portraying the playful, carefree lives of young couples before the war, director Lew Ayres captures with deep compassion the emotional trauma the war brings with it. The sea battles are pictured vividly and the hand-to-hand combat scenes are realistic. The strategic maneuvers and naval jargon used by characters in the story speak of a well-researched script and knowledgeable direction. Experience this extraordinary and heartrending saga of two lovers whose loyalties place them on opposite sides during the Civil War."
“’Hearts in Bondage’ is a classic old movie that will never grow stale. Now that we have it on DVD, we have the best-ever feature film on the Civil War to give to our grandchildren. The scenes of conflicting emotions and loss of innocence are realistically depicted. Lew Ayres’s direction is pure genius.” Sharon & Wilfred Sutton (Lowell, MASSACHUSETTS)
“This movie (’Hearts in Bondage’) is up there with eternals like ‘Gone With The Wind’. Good God, the pathos is heart-wrenching. As an Army veteran, I totally endorse this vintage film from A2ZCDS and suggest that every enlisted man see it at least once. The nobility and depravity of war have never been showcased more effectively.” M. Yarbrough Havesham , (Des Moines, IOWA)
