With the premature death of his father at 43, Robert Lowery and his mother, a concert pianist, moved to Los Angeles in hopes of his landing film and theater roles. Bob’s good looks, athletic ability, and outstanding physique soon came to the attention of Twentieth Century Fox. He was signed to Fox in 1938, and soon made a memorable appearance in the first-class film Drums Along the Mohawk. Amazingly, as Bob enteredmiddle age, he bore a striking resemblance to Clark Gable. Running Time: 64 Minutes MPAA Ratings: PG EDITORIAL REVIEW:Club Paradise, which was initially released under the more scandalous title “Sensational Hunters”, is actually a touching story of girl who like many others makes the wrong choice in life – and pays for it. Shunning Ray, a class trumpeter who adores her, Julie falls for the charms of the debonair Danny Burke, only to find that she was just one among Danny’s many girlfriends. With nobody to turn to, Julie’s emotions get the better of her. She does the only thing that can possibly prevent ‘her’ Danny from turning on his charms on some other unsuspecting girl – she shoots him dead.
In between a rather predictable drama of love and heartbreaks, you have a few wonderful song and dance sequences backed by some great performances by Doris Merrick and Robert Lowery. Shot almost entirely indoors, Doris‘ portrayal of a girl caught between her adoration for Danny and the saner choice of giving in to the adoring Ray holds the movie together. Her innocent next-door-girl looks endear her to the audience instantaneously.
Witness this heartbreaking tale of a young girl whose heart beats for one man while common sense dictates that she chose the other. USER REVIEWS:"This one is for the lonely-hearts club. Club Paradise is certain to touch the hearts of the romantically inclined. The director has done a marvelous job of portraying a young impressionable girl’s vulnerability and habitual heart-breakers mindless conquests. Definitely carries a lesson for the young - “look before you leap!”" Joan Fernandez (San Jose, California)
"For a low-budget drama, this is an outstanding commentary on the emotional trauma of a girl who has had more than her share of troubles. Doris Merrick used her charms and innocent looks to great advantage and made the movie all her own with a memorable performance."
