This 2-DVD set has some of the great production houses of the era such as Jam Handy, Filmways, On Film Inc., and Bay State Film Productions Inc.providing glimpses of the strategies employed during the sunrise of motion pictures and the birth of television. It is a must for any advertising student! Here is a complete track by track list of what you will see:
Chevrolet Sales Convention Musical This is a rare record of a song-and-dance routine at a Chevrolet sales convention, designed to motivate the sales force. See some frightening costumes and overly staged dance routines about buying Chevrolets. The most fun is watching women pop out of a map! Producer: Jam Handy Organization Sponsor: Chevrolet Division, General Motors Corporation Year: 1954 Length: 00:15:15 Audio: Mono Color: COLOR
Frigidaire Imperial Line This Jam Handy piece is a promotional film for Frigidaire dealers, showing features of the new Imperial Line of refrigerators. Very HOT women promoting some very COOL ice boxes! Producer: Jam Handy Organization Sponsor: Frigidaire Division, General Motors Corporation Year: 1956 Length: 00:20:07 Audio: Mono Color: COLOR
In the Suburbs This is a thoughtfully made advertising sales promotional film extolling 1950s suburbanites as citizens and consumers. In the Suburbs was commissioned by Redbook Magazine to solicit advertisers who wanted to target young suburban families. A hand-held camera is used to informally film newly built suburban shopping malls and what appears to be their own friends, families and children. The resulting meandering camerawork and documentary intimacy ironically foreshadows the later "underground" films made ten years later during the counterculture. This technically adventurous film also mixes black and white with color footage, uses still photos and plays with unusual camera angles—other methods that anticipate film and video work done later in the century. Producer: On Film, Inc. Sponsor: Redbook Magazine Year: 1957 Length: 00:19:29 Audio: Mono Color: MIX
Television Commercials The second DVD starts with a classic collection of broadcast advertising from the 1950s and 1960s. These ads really take you back! The Dristan "send your sinuses to Arizona" ad seems to have been either made or inspired by the "Hertz puts you in the driver’s seat" people. Humorous special effects were a fad in the early ‘60s the same way "The Matrix"-style special effects are so prevalent in ads today. The Goodyear ad is designed to make a man think that if he didn’t buy Goodyear tires for his woman, she’d be stuck alone in the rain and God only knows what might happen to her! The figure skater in the "sports" version of a Coke ad is Barbara Ann Scott, the 1948 Olympic champion, who was about 35 at the time the ad was made. The Bactine face-wash ads are absurdly sexy, as is the classic "Stripper" ad for Noxzema shave cream. The "blahs" ad for Alka-Seltzer is amazingly comparable to today’s Zoloft ads. The Heinz Pickles ad is pretty risqué for its time! Producer: N/A Sponsor: N/A Year: 1960 Length: 00:25:15 Audio: Mono Color: MIX
Cheerios/V-8 This is an ad for both cereal and juice! It is targeted at children of the space age. Remember the days when sugar was an essential dietary element? Remember when adding vegetables to practically any meal seemed a good thing to do? It’s all here in this bizarre ad! From a 21century perspective you will wonder "what were we thinking?" Producer: Filmways Sponsor: General Mills Co. Year: 1960 Length: 00:01:00 Audio: Mono Color: BLACK & WHITE
Polaroid Dealer Announcement This film introduces Polaroid’s marketing campaign for the year 1964, including TV commercials. It was produced for dealers. It is hosted by Lowell Thomas, who created Cinerama in 1952. Lowell takes us to the field to talk to nervous sales people about they expect in 1965. Producer: Bay State Film Productions, Inc. Sponsor: Polaroid Corporation Year: 1964 Length: 00:25:02 Audio: Mono Color: COLOR
Television Commercials: Telephone On this track we have three TV commercials: one set in St. Louis, Missouri: another on Mount Washington, New Hampshire;and a quick review of telephone history. You will love the old footage and the great photos! There is some wonderful editing work as well. Producer: N/A Sponsor: Bell System Year: 1970 Length: 00:04:03 Audio: Mono Color: COLOR
Bounty Paper Towels Commercial That darn ketchup! Why doesn’t it ever go where it’s aimed? Highlights of this ad are the paper towel-hoarding scene, and the beatific smile of Mrs. Porter as she feels the "six-ingredient" goodness of new Bounty. Producer: N/A Sponsor: N/A Year: N/A Length: 00:01:00 Audio: Mono Color: BLACK & WHITE
Bounty Paper Towels Commercial 2 In the same series for Bounty Paper Towels, this commercial features a housewife and a little girl who are vexed by a dog that tracks in mud. It has a jaw-dropping schlurrrrppppp special sound effect! Producer: N/A Sponsor: N/A Year: N/A Length: 00:00:59 Audio: Mono Color: BLACK & WHITE
Dentu-Creme Commercial 2 This is a short TV spot for Dentu-Creme. It will stick with you! Producer: N/A Sponsor: Dentu-Creme Year: N/A Length: 00:00:10 Audio: Mono Color: BLACK & WHITE
Newport Cigarette Commercial #4 "Smoke cigarettes and women will want you" seems to be the point of this expensive television commercial produced by very talented people. The ad shows a bored prosperous man who sees a seductive blonde jump out of his TV set and hand him a packet of smokes. Saying hello to his wife, he settles back in his comfortable chair to enjoy his gift. In the final scene, his blonde friend waves seductively from the TV screen. Producer: N/A Sponsor: N/A Year: N/A Length: 00:01:00 Audio: Mono Color: COLOR
Newport Cigarette Commercial #8 If the ad agency for Newport cigarettes didn’t win a Clio award for their advertising talents, then there’s something wrong with the world! In this ad, an actor laments about running out of cigarettes. Luckily, the lead actor has Newports, the other actor quickly likes them, and they distribute the cigarettes to the rest of the cast. Now, if that wasn’t enough, the whole ad is in RHYMING COUPLETS. That’s right, everything is in song. Just another example of the Newport geniuses! Producer: N/A Sponsor: N/A Year: N/A Length: 00:01:00 Audio: Mono Color: COLOR Running Time: DVD One: 01:00:52 DVD Two: 00:58:12
EDITORIAL REVIEW: This historic set of DVDs recounts, through some of the best advertisement films ever made, how advertisers cashed in on the fabulous opportunity to reach countless prospective buyers on television. While outdoors advertisements with their glittering electric hoardings and ad films screened in movie houses had their use, they were limited in scope. Television opened the floodgates to a limitless audience and soon enjoyed top billing.
Sandwiched between popular soaps, wedged amid innings of an exciting ball game or occasionally telecast as full-length documentaries, these ad films had to be brief, exciting, punchy and convincing all at once in order to be effective. Their repetitive showing also meant that they had to be more charming than their movie-house cousins. The clips on these DVDs offer a fascinating study of how this was achieved by advertisers in the 50s through the 70s.
Fabulous dance routines, attractive male and female models, far-fetched storylines which at times bordered on the absurd, humor, exaggeration, eye-catching locations and heady punch lines that characterized early television ads are evident in abundance in these clips, some of which bear the unmistakable seal of Jam Handy’s genius as an ad film producer.
These clips cover the history of advertising during one of the most significant periods in an entertaining and convincing style. They had me glued to my screen for the better part of an hour and I can’t think of a better way of studying the history of early television advertising than through the fabulous examples included on this set of DVDs. If you belong to any of these groups – history students, advertisement buffs, collectors of vintage films - or are simply curious to learn how ad films influence audiences – grab your copy of this fascinating set of DVDs today!
