One of the best ways to move around New Zealand’s Southern region is by helicopter. Pilot Richard Hannibal Hays works in the sparsely populated and remote areas of Fiordland National Park. Fifteen fiords including Milford and Doubtful Sound combine to create this World Natural Heritage listed region. Dense rainforest including giant ferns, moss and beech trees covers the hillsides. The region is also the natural habitat of the Kakapo, the world’s only flightless parrot. Humid air flowing from the Tasman Sea rises against the western slopes of the Fiordland mountains and drops precipitation on the forests below creating one of the wettest areas in the world. The Tasman Sea sweeps against the coast of this astonishing wilderness, providing an abundant fishery, and food source for coastal fur seal colonies. We learn about the history of one of the country’s most beautiful lakes, Lake Manapouri, where the New Zealand green movement was born. From here we travel north to Queenstown, the ‘adventure capital of the world’. The surrounding region featured in the Lord of the Rings trilogy and is a mecca for many adventure sports including paragliding.
