The Focus Is Fun!

"Building the World of Tomorrow" was the motto of the 1939 World fair held at Flushing Meadows Park, New York. Sandwiched between two economically draining events - the great depression and the Second World War - its themes of limitless progress offered hope to a nation that was struggling to find its feet again.

The Fair's focal point were the Trylon and Perisphere, a 700-foot spire and a dome as wide as a city block, structures which themselves symbolized America's march to modernization. Inside the Perisphere was the fair's central exhibit: Democracity, with steel models of the continents, and replicas of satellites. The most popular exhibit was the "Futurama" exhibit at the General Motors pavilion;designed by Norman Bel Geddes, one of the leading industrial designers of the 1930s.General Motors naturally defined the future as an automobile-centered one.

There were innumerable things to see, touch, feel and experience at the 1939 World Fair in New York. The basic theme that runs through these clips is that fairs are for enjoyment. The absence of a tightly written script is a refreshing change and allows the camera to wander almost at will among the myriad displays and attractions. Thus, you get to see the fair as an amateur would - without the strapping of professionalism.

The films are quite exhaustive in content, covering a host of activities. Many of the clips give you a feel of what it was like to wander around the fair grounds, which were dotted with flowers, ponds, gardens, statues and people. You also witness rare events like the French Ambassador's visit and the visit made by the king and Queen of England. You see pavilions with their futuristic displays. A mouth -watering glance at restaurants tells you what people preferred to eat at the fair. Yes, fairs are fun and the 1939 World fair in New York was no exception. These DVDs provide an interesting overview of the 1939 New York World Fair.

"I enjoyed viewing these DVDs just as much I did the others in this series on historic fairs from A2ZCDS. The films give you a good feel of what it was like to be there. They seem to have been shot by people who wanted to capture as many activities as possible while the action lasted. It's interesting to see how these grounds looked way back in the '30s and even more interesting to note that these grounds continue to stage world events (I mean The U.S. Open)."

"This is a great documentary, which captures the essence of the New York Fair. I once lived there (in New York) and visited the '64 Fair. I was curious about the '39 event and was fortunate to see this set of DVDs. Some lively photography is used in this presentation, which serves to preserve the historic event in an enjoyable manner. The scenes of people involved in various activities and visuals of the outdoors are insightful. A closer look at the displays would have made the picture clearer, but I presume those pictures will appear in one the future DVDs."
