Magical Moments!

Detroit, Michigan, is a city with a wonderfully rich history. Yet, it may have remained a trading post had it not been for an ambitious industrialist named Henry Ford, who moved to Detroit to establish the Ford Motor Company in 1903. Within five years, his dream of making the automobile affordable and available to all Americans was fast becoming a reality. Thanks to the Ford Motor Company, Detroit soon became a major industrial hub in the country with many firsts to its credit. Detroit was the first city to have a paved concrete road (in 1909), the first to install a traffic light (in 1915) and the USA's first to have an urban freeway (in 1942).

While most people know that Cadillacs come from Detroit, few realize that the city of Detroit itself came from a Cadillac. Enterprising French trader and explorer Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac stumbled upon what is now Detroit in 1701, figuring it would make a good base from which to send furs to Canada.

Before the age of the automobile, Detroit was an important station along the "Underground Railroad", and a major escape route for law-breakers because of its proximity to the Canadian border. The automobile industry attracted several businesses and people to the great city, which grew in leaps and bounds. Between the 1950s and 1980s, however, Detroit lost nearly a million residents who, along with many businesses moved out into quieter and safer suburbs.

The historic films included in this unique and fascinating DVD, provide a valuable insight into the lives of people who made Detroit their home in the early part of the 20th century.

The films on this DVD have done a marvelous job of capturing some of the hype and glory of Detroit in its heydays in a charming and entertaining manner.

The Detroit Newsreels are especially fascinating, as they provide live action from the early years of the 20th century. You will witness some nostalgic shots of Detroit's citizens engaging in a wide variety of activities. Shots of exciting picnics, exhilarating motorcycle competitions, a heart-stopping police chase and a peek into the lives of men enjoying the hospitality of the State Prison captured on this newsreel.

My Dad's Company, a trademark Jam Handy production, provides an in-depth account of the Detroit Edison Company's activities. Handy presents a sea of statistical data about the manpower and materials employed in the production of electricity by the company in an absorbing manner through innovative reenactments, as only he can.

Life for those serving on the Detroit Police force was far from being a dull, monotonous pursuit of culprits and this is exemplified in a lively manner in the clip entitled This is Your Police Station. Beginning with the careful selection of cadets, this documentary showcases the rigorous training the cadets undergo before they are incorporated into the Detroit Police Department.

Yes, life in Detroit has always been exciting and you don't have to look beyond this fascinating DVD for proof of that!

"Detroit Newsreel is a film you mustn't miss if you are an out-doors enthusiast like me. It offers a fascinating overview of the city and the happenings in the automobile city. I found the police chase to be particularly charming and the athleticism of the police officer really floored me - just imagine jumping off a moving motorcycle onto a car full of culprits! I am sure his boss had something to say to him about the smashed bike though (Kidding). My son, Bob, who was looking for material for a class presentation, was thrilled when he saw the clip My Dad's Company. I can guess what he is going to present! This is a great DVD, I love it."
