Where can you combine archaeology, mythology, and modernization all in one city? Why ancient Athens, of course! With its rich Grecian heritage, new international airport, refurbished hotels, and pristine archaeological sites, Athens is a great place to experience history in the 21st century. First we’ll make our way to Syntagma Square, the big, open-air center of Athens, complete with a beautiful new fountain. Make sure to throw a coin and make a wish in the fountain, for they say that if you do, someday you’ll come back to Athens! Or... was that the Trevi Fountain in Rome? Next we’ll take the trek up to Greece’s most famous landmark: the Acropolis. Here you’ll witness the grandeur of rich Doric and Ionic architecture. A most stunning sight is the Parthenon, the 5th century B.C. temple and ancient home to the chryselephantine (gold and ivory) statue of Athena. The Parthenon's towering presence is quite an archaeological treasure to see! An excursion to Greece is nothing without a trip to the Agora, the ancient marketplace and heart of Athens. Relive its commercial, civil, political, and religious history by walking the same streets as Pericles and Socrates! Do this all while enjoying the cosmopolitan selection of food like souvlaki, spanokopita, and ouzo. Plus, a trip to the marketplace isn’t complete without a stop by the Plaka Shopping District, where you can find ancient coins, natural sponges, and exotic spices. We’ll finish off our Grecian journey by enjoying Athen’s most abundant natural resource - water! You can easily hop on a ferry for a day trip to the nearby islands or simply bask in the golden Greek sun. Another ouzo please!
